An answer to the MLB oblique injury

In a recent USA Today article, it was reported that oblique injuries were becoming more common place in major league baseball. The article was brought to my attention by a former student and I devoured it in a few minutes.

Known facts:
• The injury usually occurs on the side opposite to the throwing arm, with MRI’s confirming an internal oblique injury pulling away from the 11th or 12th rib.
• One player related incurring an ankle injury from a slide and then on the next throw injuring his left internal oblique
• The injury is occurring with greater frequency
• One player reported that he felt better once he discontinued doing his core exercise
